Star Wars Rebels “Twilight of the Apprentice” Review

By Josiah Ward

Last night’s episode of Star Wars Rebels was easily the best episode of this season, and it might even be my favorite of the series. Ezra, Ahsoka, and Kanan follow Yoda’s advice and travel to Malachor to seek knowledge about the Sith. There is so much to unpack from this episode, so let me get right to it.

The design for Malachor was brilliant, and came across really well in animation. I loved the line of dialogue from Kanan early on in the episode, “Malachor has always been off limits to Jedi”. I feel like this isn’t the last time we’re going to see Malachor in Star Wars Canon.

Maul and Ezra

I LOVED when Ezra and Maul meet, the slow minipulation wouldn’t have worked in a 22 minute episode. I thought they’d rush through Ezra’s slow turn, but it felt natural to me.

Also, Maul looks freaking fantastic in this episode, they nailed his animation.

Kanan’s Eyes

They went there! I thought they might chop a limb off, but that’s always replaceable. I figured Kanan might bite the dust, but never thought they would make him blind.

Is he going to start wearing a mask now? I loved when Kanan and Maul faced off when Kanan was blinded. It felt like Marvel’s Daredevil show on Netflix.

Ezra and the Dark Side
We all knew Ezra was building towards the dark side, and this episode perfectly demonstrated how someone could be minipulated by it so easily. The end shot when the holocran is being opened by Ezra was a brilliant way to end the season. Maul says that you have to either be a Sith, or think like one, to open the holocran. Is Ezra full dark side now? I don’t think so, I think he knows how to think like one though.

Lightsaber Duels

There are some epic lightsaber duels in this episode. Vader vs. Ahsoka, Darth Maul vs. Kanan, Ahsoka vs. Maul, different Inquisitors fighting different heroes/maul. So many, and they’re all really good!

Vader vs Ahsoka

We’ve been waiting for this moment for a while now, and it’s finally here! The fight between these two was amazing. I loved when Ahsoka slashes part of Vader’s helmet, and the voice changer starts going out. We get to hear Anakins actual voice, and you can feel his struggle with the dark side through his dialogue and especially body language. You can see that for a moment he was Anakin, and then the darkness consumed him and he was Vader again.

I really thought they were going to kill her… and then the temple exploded. After the fight, we see both of them going their seperate ways, and it looked like Ahsoka goes deeper into the temple.

This didn’t bother me as much as some people online, but I still felt it was lazy and kind of stupid.

Maul Revealing His Plan

This might sound like a nit-pick, but I didn’t like when Maul shared his evil plan with Ahsoka and Kanan. I thought it could have EASILY been cut, and the audience would still understand what happened because of Ezra basically saying the same thing a minute later. It felt very “mustache twirling villainy”.

Big Explosion Cop-Out

While I loved the ending when Ahsoka stays and fights Vader, it was a bit of a cop-out to just have the temple explode, and both characters survive the explosion. They didn’t know how to end the fight without Vader killing Ahsoka, so they cheated.

Also, I’ve seen some people on Facebook and Twitter believing that Ahsoka died… Trust me she didn’t. Here’s a zoomed in pic just for you conspiracy theorists:

The Verdict

I loved this episode, but a couple things I mentioned prevent me from rating it higher. I’m giving this episode a 9/10.
